When I come to design and develop our programs, I look as deeply as possible at what are the real needs. Between 2011 and 2014, I saw the huge contrast in my own journey moving from working in an entrepreneurship ecosystem support provider ( ElMashrou3 reality TV show for entrepreneurs) to running our own product and service startups (ElRehla retreats and DOTS Planner). My assumptions back then of what founders need was very ill informed. Now, more than ever, understanding the full picture of the bootstrapping phase and the very low phases founders go through, I think far more deeply on WHAT IS REALLY NEED when it comes to designing the programs we deliver for entrepreneurs across our camps. What are the technical needs, the network access and the behavior change requirements we need for driving our programs to help new founders really see value in what we offer.
With these questions came a lot of research, and clear gaps were found in the data -- This information, if available, would inform support service development to be far more effective.
So during the entrepreneurship ecosystem retreat that was held last May, a small group of ecosystem players joined the data and research team. We all agreed that there is lot of missing data in the field. We put forward 3 projects we are currently working on and inviting others to support:
-Creating a visual and easy to filter map of all the research that exists around startups and entrepreneurship in Egypt
-Developing a questionnaire on the main data gaps that exist in the work around the entrepreneurship movement in Egypt. -Testing these questions with the manifesto community as well as some startup founders ( done already) to validate and take opinions on any questions missing.
-Hosting research labs across different spaces in Egypt as spaces that allow early stage founders to get quick validation/ feedback from potential customers as ways to iterate quickly.
The power of more data is endless and interesting. We invite anyone else that is excited about data-driven program development to write to the manifesto team and join us in developing the outputs of this committee further.
